Every group has a default currency, but any expense can be entered in another currency. ShareCost keeps the original amount exactly as you typed it and converts it for balances.
Enter the expense
- Start a new expense and tap the currency next to the amount.
- In Select Currency, search or pick from Popular currencies, Fiat currencies and Cryptocurrencies. The group's currency and the one Detected from your location are listed first.
- Enter the amount you paid in that currency and finish the expense as usual.
The expense shows the original amount and, in the group currency, a converted amount marked with ≈.
Use the rate your bank gave you
Banks and cards often apply their own rate. You can store the rate you actually got:
- Below the amount, tap the exchange rate pill to open Exchange Rate.
- Choose Edit Rate and type the rate (How much is 1 … worth in …?), or choose Enter Amount and type what you actually paid in the group currency (How much did you actually pay in …?).
- Save. The expense page then shows Custom rate. Tap Use Market Rate to go back to the automatic rate.
Good to know
- Rates are refreshed daily and locked when you save the expense. Later rate changes never affect existing expenses.
- The ≈ sign means the converted amount is rounded during conversion. Original amounts are always exact. Groups where every expense is in the group currency never show ≈.
- Balances and settlements are calculated in the group currency. Amounts in the same currency are added exactly; amounts in other currencies are converted via their stored rate.
- You can change the group currency in Group Settings without losing data, see Change a group's name, currency, colour or categories.
- Your Total Balance on Home uses your own Default Currency, see Change your default currency.
Web
Pick the currency from the dropdown next to the amount while adding or editing an expense. Custom exchange rates are entered in the mobile app; the web app shows a custom rate on the expense page when one was set.
