At the end of a trip, the settlement plan tells everyone exactly who pays whom so the whole group ends at zero. The Simplify debts setting decides how those payments are chosen.
Open the settlement plan
- Open the group and go to the Balances tab.
- Tap View Settlement Plan. The Settlement Plan screen lists every payment and says … payments needed.
- Tap share to send the plan as text to the group chat (Share Settlement Plan).
If nobody owes anything you see All Settled Up!.
Simplify debts on or off
Admins change this in Group Settings under Settlement:
- Simplify debts on: Suggests the fewest possible payments to settle the group, even if that means paying someone you didn't directly share an expense with. Example: Anna owes Ben 10, Ben owes Clara 10. The plan tells Anna to pay Clara once.
- Simplify debts off: Suggests direct payments — you only pay back the people you actually shared expenses with. Anna pays Ben, Ben pays Clara.
The setting changes only the suggestions. Balances themselves stay the same.
Good to know
- The plan is recalculated from the current balances every time you open it; record settlements and the remaining payments shrink.
- You can still record any payment you like, with any amount, regardless of the plan, see Settle up and record a payment.
- Payments in the plan are shown in the group currency. Where a conversion was involved the amount carries ≈.
Web
The group's Balances tab shows Suggested Settlements computed the same way. Sharing the plan as text and switching Simplify debts are done in the mobile app.
