ShareCost keeps a running balance for every member of every group. A balance is the difference between what you paid for others and what others paid for you, after settlements.
Read a group's balances
- Open the group and go to the Balances tab.
- The top shows Your balance in the group currency.
- Each member is listed as Gets Back (others owe them), Owes Money (they owe others) or Settled Up.
- Below, Suggested Settlements lists the payments that would clear the group. Tap one to pre-fill a settlement, see Settle up and record a payment.
The Stats tab repeats this as Member Balances (Who owes what), together with Your Expense Flows (Who paid for whom, settlements not included).
Your balance across groups
Home shows Total Balance: all your group balances converted into your Default Currency. Swipe the balance cards to see one group at a time. Green is money coming to you, red is money you owe.
Why an amount shows ≈
The ≈ sign appears when a balance includes expenses in a different currency than the group currency. Those amounts are converted with the rate stored on the expense, which can round by a cent. Original expense amounts are always exact, see Add an expense in a foreign currency.
Good to know
- Balances are calculated from the expense splits, not from who was "in the group". A member who is not part of a split neither owes nor is owed for it.
- A settlement reduces the balances of exactly the two people involved.
- Virtual members have balances like everyone else; you settle with them on their behalf.
- You cannot leave a group until your balance is Settled, see Archive, leave or delete a group.
- Whether suggestions pair you only with people you shared expenses with depends on the group's Simplify debts setting, see Use the settlement plan and simplify debts.
Web
Open the group: the header shows Your balance and the Balances tab lists Member Balances and Suggested Settlements. The Statistics tab adds a Balance Over Time chart.
