Moving from another expense-sharing app? Export your data there as a CSV or Excel file and import it into a ShareCost group on the web. ShareCost reads the file, recognises the people in it and suggests categories.
Import a file
- In the web app, open the group and click Import (Import expenses from another app). The page Import expenses opens.
- Drag the file onto the page or click Choose file. Accepted formats: CSV, XLSX or XLS.
- Wait while the page shows Reading the file… and then Analyzing & categorizing with AI….
- Review the preview:
- The header counts what will be imported (… to import), including settlements (and … settlements) and … possible duplicates.
- Under People, each name from the file is shown as Matched: a member, or Not in this group. For people who are not in the group, tick Add as new member; they are created as virtual members.
- Each row has a checkbox. Untick rows you do not want, for example duplicates.
- Click Import (…). The page shows Importing… and then Imported … expenses.
- Click Back to group.
Rows that cannot be imported
Rows with problems are flagged and left out: Unreadable amount, Missing currency, Unreadable date, Splits don’t add up, No payer detected or No participants. Fix them in the spreadsheet and import that part again.
Good to know
- Exports from Splitwise and Dlužníček are recognised automatically. Other files work when they contain a date, a description, an amount with currency and who paid.
- Rows marked possible duplicate look like expenses already in the group. They are unticked by default.
- Settlements in the file are imported as settlements, so balances match the source app.
- Imported expenses appear in everyone's app after sync, like any other expense. Members can edit them if they are the payer or creator.
- Virtual members created by the import can later be linked to real accounts, see Add a virtual member for someone without the app.
