A virtual member is a person in your group who does not use ShareCost, for example a child, a parent or a friend who never installs apps. You manage their expenses and their share of every split. Their balance is tracked like everyone else's.
Add a virtual member
- Open the group and go to the Members tab.
- Tap Add Member, then Add Virtual Member.
- Enter a Name (up to 50 characters) and optionally add a photo.
- Tap Add Virtual Member.
The app notes: You will be the manager of this virtual member. Only you can edit or delete them. A virtual member is marked Virtual in the member list.
Edit a virtual member
- On the Members tab, tap the virtual member.
- Choose Edit Virtual Member, change the name or photo and tap Save Changes. Changes apply in every group this member belongs to.
Turn a virtual member into a real one
When the person later installs ShareCost and joins the group, you can merge the virtual member into their real account:
- Tap the virtual member on the Members tab and choose Link to real member….
- Pick the real member. The app explains: This will combine all of … history into …. This can't be undone.
- Tap Link. All past expenses, splits and settlements of the virtual member now belong to the real member.
Good to know
- Only the manager (the person who created the virtual member) can edit, link or remove them.
- Virtual members are included in equal splits like everyone else. Pin or unpin them as default split members on the Members tab, see Split an expense unequally.
- Settling up with a virtual member works the same way: record the payment yourself, see Settle up and record a payment.
Web
- Open the group and go to the Members tab.
- Click Add Virtual Member, enter the name and confirm.
- To remove a virtual member you created, use Remove virtual member next to their name.
Linking a virtual member to a real account is done in the mobile app.
