A recurring expense is a template for a cost that repeats, such as rent, a streaming subscription or a cleaner. ShareCost creates the real expense automatically on each due date.
Create a recurring expense
- Open the group and tap Recurring in the bottom bar. The Recurring Expenses list opens.
- Tap + (or Create Recurring Expense if the list is empty).
- Fill in the description, amount, currency, Category, Who Pays? and the split, exactly like a normal expense.
- Set the Frequency: weekly, every two weeks, monthly, quarterly, every six months or yearly.
- Pick the start date. Optionally set End Date (Optional) and Max Occurrences (Optional) (Leave empty for unlimited).
- Tap Create. You see Recurring Expense Created!.
Manage a recurring expense
The list shows each template as Active or Paused, with Next: … and Created: … times. Filter with All, Active and Paused. Per template you can:
- Pause: nothing is generated until you Resume.
- Generate: create the next expense right now (Generate an expense from "…" immediately?).
- Edit: change amount, split, frequency, end date or limit. The group, the payer and the start date cannot be changed.
- Delete: removes the template. Previously generated expenses will not be affected.
Good to know
- Generation runs once a day. An expense due today appears during that run, not at the moment you create the template; use Generate if you need it immediately.
- Only the payer or a group admin can edit a recurring expense.
- Generated expenses are normal expenses. On their page, View Schedule opens the template.
- Amounts in another currency use the rate stored in the template, so every generated expense has the same converted value.
- Receipts and locations cannot be attached to templates.
Web
Recurring expenses are created and managed in the mobile app. The expenses they generate appear on the web like any other expense.
