A dispute is a formal objection to an expense: you were not there, the amount is wrong, the split is wrong, or it was entered twice. The person who paid gets notified and has to react before the group settles up.
Raise a dispute
- Open the expense and scroll to Disputes, or swipe the expense to the left on the Expenses tab and tap Dispute.
- Tap Raise Dispute.
- Answer Why do you disagree with this expense? with one reason: I wasn't there, Wrong amount, Wrong split, Duplicate expense or Other.
- Optionally add a comment (Explain your concern...) and tap Submit Dispute.
You can dispute an expense you are part of but did not pay. Each person can have one open dispute per expense.
Respond to a dispute on your expense
The payer sees Tap to resolve or reject on the dispute.
- Tap the dispute to open Dispute Details.
- Choose one:
- Edit & Resolve: fix the expense; saving it closes the dispute.
- Resolve Dispute: mark it resolved without changes, for example after fixing it earlier.
- Reject Dispute: add a note (Explain why you're rejecting this dispute...) and reject.
Withdraw or reopen
- The person who raised the dispute can tap it and choose Withdraw Dispute, or swipe the expense and tap Withdraw.
- A rejected dispute can be reopened once with Reopen Dispute.
Good to know
- Dispute states are Open, Resolved, Rejected and Withdrawn.
- Expenses with an open dispute carry a badge and can be filtered with Disputed in a group or Disputed Only on the Expenses tab.
- When someone records a settlement while disputes are open, the app warns: This group has … open disputes. Are you sure you want to proceed with the settlement?
- Everyone involved receives notifications, controlled under Dispute Notifications in Manage push notifications.
